Different types of oxygen Cylinders
The oxygen contained in the tank is kept in gaseous form inside the gas cylinder under pressure or in liquid form in a cryogenic storage tank. Both store 99.5% pure oxygen.
Compressed oxygen gas – inside these cylinders, oxygen gets taken from the air and compressed, then filled into tanks of aluminium with up to 2,200 pounds for every square inch (PSI) of pressure. When the gas is released the pressure is high enough to force the oxygen to escape and into the device for oxygen distribution (like the nasal tubes or oxygen masks).
Liquid oxygen – inside the tanks oxygen gets cool to -182.8degC until it’s in liquid form. Then, it is stored in a tank which keeps its liquid at a cool temperature. When the gas is subjected to temperatures, it changes to a gas, which immediately is released outwards via the device for oxygen distribution.
What does an oxygen cylinder function?
An oxygen cylinder can be described as an organ that stores oxygen. When used in hospitals or in homes they assist in providing oxygen to patients who are unable to get enough oxygen by themselves (these amounts can be analysed by using an oximeter for pulse).
On the top end of the cylinder the flow regulator transforms the oxygen pressure within the tank into the flow that is measured in LPM. (LPM). There are two primary kinds of flow regulators that are continuous flow and pulse-dose flow.
Continuous flow regulators permit one to establish a certain LPM and then disperse the same amount of oxygen until it’s shut off, or the tank is empty. They are typically used by those who need oxygen on a regular basis.
Pulse-dose flow-regulators enable one to boost the efficiency of their oxygen cylinder. They do this through short excitations of oxygen whenever the patient breathes. This means that oxygen is wasted as they exhale. The machine has to remain set at the specified LPM like the continuously flow controller.
FAQ’s
1. What is an oxygen cylinder used for?
Ans: It is used to deliver supplemental oxygen to those who require it.
2. How long does a 15 Litre oxygen cylinder last?
Ans: At the rate of 1 LPM it can last about 37 hours.
3. Can I get oxygen without a doctor?
Ans: Without a prescription you should not use supplemental oxygen.
4. What oxygen cylinder is used in hospitals?
Ans: Usually hospitals rely on liquid medical oxygen as the primary source.
5. What are oxygen cylinders?
Ans: An oxygen cylinder is a storage tank used for supplying oxygen to the patient through a surgical mask or cannula.
